What is Grey actually for?
Grey is built for the modern built environment, not the forest. As concealment it does one job well: in cities, it melts into concrete, asphalt, steel and shadow far better than green or earth tones, which is why urban camouflage patterns lean heavily on grey. In open country it is a different story. Against foliage or natural terrain, a solid grey figure stands out, so it offers little field camouflage on its own. Grey also has a low-profile advantage off the battlefield, reading as neutral, civilian-friendly clothing rather than obvious military kit, which makes it popular for discreet everyday carry. Think of grey as an urban and low-visibility color, strongest among hard surfaces and in low light, weakest out in the green.
