Does black work in the field?
Honestly, not as camouflage. Black is the rarest color in nature, so a black outline reads as a solid, man-made shape against almost any backdrop, including a night sky, which is never truly black. Under moonlight or night vision, deep black turns into a dark silhouette that stands out rather than disappears, which is why most modern night uniforms use greens and grays instead of pure black. Black also absorbs heat fast in sun and shows dust and wear quickly. So where does it earn its place? In genuine darkness, in shadow, indoors and at night during CQB, and anywhere a low-profile, uniform, intimidating look matters more than blending in. Used with intent rather than as concealment, black is a tool, not a disguise.
